Obituary of John Fredrick Mulkey

On May 1, 2021 John passed away peacefully surrounded by his close family. Born August 4, 1943 in South Bend, Indiana. John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Shepard Mulkey and Mary Elizabeth Geissel, and his sister Laura Palmer. John is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Merri Mulkey, his daughter Dawn Edsall and husband Brian Edsall, and his son Brian Mulkey and wife Dr. Sarah Mulkey. John has 3 beautiful grandchildren, Anne, Katelyn and Jack all of whom he adored. He also leaves behind his beloved pet Rocky Bird. John was a happy go lucky guy, with a zest for life that was palpable. John enjoyed good conversation, and always brought out the best in those close to him. His warmth and love enriched the lives of the people he knew. The majority of John’s career was working in Labor Unions. He was a skillful negotiator, and worked hard on behalf of grocery store employees, service providers, and meat cutters. Upon retiring as President from U.F.C.W. Local #37 in South Bend, Indiana, John moved the family to Toledo, OH and began working again in organized labor for another 6 years. John and Merri relocated to Florida in 1998. Since that time, he became involved with several organizations. Those included The United States Power Squadron, his neighborhood HOA, and played golf regularly with the Sunshine Golf League. He also enjoyed his Wednesday lunch date with the “Despicables”. Family is asking that memorial contributions be sent to Florida Wildlife Hospital at 4560 North US Highway 1, Palm Shores FL 32935. Donations can also be made online at www.floridawildlifehospital.org. In honor of remembering a man loved by all, the family is planning a Celebration of Life to be held a later date.
